Visa-free, visa on arrival and electronic authorisation are three different things

Mobility summaries group these together as though they were equivalent. They differ in cost, in what can go wrong, and in how much you must do before travelling.

Visa-free, visa on arrival and electronic authorisation are three different things

Summaries of passport access routinely lump three arrangements into one figure. For planning a trip they behave quite differently, and confusing them causes missed flights.

Visa-freenothing to arrange before travelling
Visa on arrivalissued at the border, usually for a fee
Electronic authorisationapplied for online before departure
Common threadnone guarantees admission

Visa-free

The simplest arrangement. You travel, present your passport, and are admitted for a permitted period.

Things to verify even here, because visa-free does not mean condition-free:

  • Passport validity requirement — commonly a minimum period remaining beyond the intended stay
  • Blank pages required in some destinations
  • Onward or return ticket, which airlines frequently check at boarding
  • Proof of accommodation and funds, which border officers may request
  • The permitted period, and whether it is counted per entry or across a window

The last point causes the most trouble. Some destinations permit a stay per entry; others count total days across a rolling period, so leaving and returning does not reset the clock.

Visa on arrival

Issued at the border after you land. Convenient, but with specific risks that visa-free does not carry.

  • Not every port of entry offers it. An arrangement may apply at main international airports and not at land borders or smaller airports
  • Documents and payment must be ready — passport photographs, a completed form, and the fee in an accepted currency and denomination
  • It can be suspended at short notice
  • Queues can be long enough to matter for onward connections

The first is the one that ruins trips. Check the arrangement for the specific port of entry you will use, not for the country in general — the same warning that applies to land borders elsewhere.

Practical preparation: carry passport photographs, cash in the required currency in small denominations, your accommodation address, and a printed onward ticket.

Electronic authorisation

An online application submitted before departure. Cheaper and faster than a full visa, but it is a step that must be completed, and forgetting it means being denied boarding.

What matters here:

  • Apply through the official government site. Unofficial sites charge substantial mark-ups, and some are outright fraudulent
  • Processing is usually quick but not instant — leave days, not hours, since applications can be referred for review
  • Details must match the passport exactly; a mismatch can invalidate it
  • It has a validity period, and often a limit on entries
  • It is tied to a passport — renewing the passport usually means reapplying

The first point deserves emphasis because this is one of the most common travel frauds. An official electronic authorisation costs a modest official fee; sites charging many times that are intermediaries at best.

Note also that a growing number of destinations are introducing pre-travel authorisation for travellers who previously needed nothing at all. An arrangement that required no action last year may require one now, which is a good reason to check requirements close to departure rather than relying on past experience.

What none of them guarantee

This point is worth stating plainly because it is widely misunderstood:

None of these arrangements guarantees entry. Each removes the requirement to obtain permission in advance. The decision to admit is made by a border officer at the point of arrival, and it can be refused.

Refusals are uncommon for travellers whose purpose is clear and consistent, but they occur, and the usual reasons are avoidable:

  • Inability to explain the purpose of the trip clearly
  • No onward ticket
  • No accommodation details
  • Insufficient funds for the stated stay
  • Previous overstays or immigration issues
  • Answers that contradict information already held

The practical protection is simple: be able to state clearly why you are visiting, where you will stay, how long, and how you will support yourself — and carry documents that support each of those answers.

A planning checklist

  1. Check requirements for your nationality, for your specific port of entry, close to departure
  2. Identify which of the three arrangements applies
  3. If authorisation is required, apply early through the official channel
  4. Verify passport validity and blank pages
  5. Prepare onward ticket, accommodation and funds evidence
  6. Check requirements for any transit point as well as the destination

Point six is the one most often skipped, and transit requirements are covered in their own article because they catch travellers out regularly.

Frequently asked questions

How do the three arrangements differ?

Visa-free requires nothing in advance; visa on arrival is issued at the border for a fee; electronic authorisation must be applied for online before departure or you will be denied boarding.

What is the main risk with visa on arrival?

That it is not offered at every port of entry. Check the arrangement for the specific airport or border you will use, not for the country in general.

Where should electronic authorisation be obtained?

Only through the official government site. Unofficial sites charge large mark-ups and some are fraudulent — the official fee is modest.

Do any of these guarantee entry?

No. They remove the need to obtain permission in advance, but admission is decided by a border officer on arrival and can be refused.
